From Bean to Bliss:
Marc’s Chocolate Odyssey
Marc's Tale…
“My passion for chocolate came to me at a very young age when I lived in Switzerland. During my time there, I had the unique opportunity to visit, and even make chocolate at some of the most well-known chocolate factories in the world. Many years later, when I was introduced to my school’s Personal Project, I found this to be the perfect opportunity to bring my love of chocolate to life. During this eye-opening experience, I investigated the cocoa industry and its impacts on societies and learned how to make my own chocolate bars from scratch using only pure, natural ingredients. After lots of experimentation, I finally perfected my recipe, and it turned out to be a big hit in my community.
The outcome of this project and the popularity of my chocolate inspired me to take it further. During the fall of that same year, I travelled to Costa Rica and toured the cocoa plantation that supplies one of my favorite chocolate brands, Läderach. During my visit, I met the head farmer and learned the ins and outs of the fermentation process and how they prepare the cocoa to be delivered. I was even given a deeper insight into the ethics in the cocoa industry and how workers are treated, which was extremely enriching and a perfect continuation of my prior research.
After my time in Costa Rica, when my interest in chocolate was at an all-time high, I finally took the leap to start selling my chocolates. I designed my own wrapping…ran a survey at Somersfield Academy, had them professionally printed, and wrapped each bar by hand. I sold my first bars at my school’s Holiday Market and continued to deliver orders after that. I decided to donate all profits to charity, because I believe that business is soulless without a true, positive impact on the community.
To me, chocolate was never just about great taste. It is about the full journey, from bean to bar. That is why, with Marc’s Bar, I am doing everything in my power to ethically source my beans, use organic ingredients to maintain authenticity in my chocolate, and ensure the community benefits with more than just mouthwatering dark chocolate.”
